Eulogy of Kathleen “Grandma Kay” McGuire
Good morning. My name is Kristy Kershaw Jefferson and I am Granddaughter #3. Before we get started I’d like to take a quick roll call of all the McGuires who are present. It will only take 20 – 30 minutes.
Ok, I won’t do that. But it does strike me as I look around what a body of work my Grandma Kay left behind, literally. You all know the numbers - seven kids. 16 grandkids. Soon to be 17 great grandkids, and I’m assuming – counting. No pressure, it just kind of seems like our family’s thing.
I know that many of us have sat next to Grandma or Grandpa at any number of Mac Attacks, asking them what it felt like to look around and see what they created. Entire houses full of good, kind people who laugh freely and love fiercely. It is truly a sight to behold. And I can tell you that some of the reactions of her great grandchildren this past week say everything. So many of them have looked at their parents or their grandparents and said – Are you ok?
Nothing made Grandma prouder than her family, absolutely nothing. If you called her out of the blue she could literally tell you what every single person in the family was up to – every kid, every grandkid, every great grandkid, every outlaw … She came to birthday parties, soccer games, dance recitals, gymnastics meets, graduations, or just to hang out and talk.
When I was a kid, they would stay with us – no longer than three days of course on account of Grandpa’s “guests past three days are like fish” policy, or we would stay with. Like many of us have, Grandma and I would talk for hours, play cards, play games, then talk some more. “Well, Miss Kris, I hear” – and fill in the blank with whatever was going on at that time. Everyone in this room will know what I am talking about when I say that when Grandma Kay turned to you, even if it was in the middle of a rowdy Mac Attack, you had her full attention. She had a way of making you feel like it was just the two of you, and if it was just you two, like this was the most important conversation in the world. She was always up for an in-depth discussion about what shenanigans were happening in the news, or the latest book she had read, of which there were many. She listened intently. She teased – no more so than when going toe to toe with Artie at the kitchen table. (“I’ve got my eye on you!”) And behind those sparkly eyes and serene smile, there was just a dash of impish wickedness, which was probably my favorite part of her.
And of course, it would be impossible to talk about the life of Kathleen McGuire without talking about the love her life – Francis A. McGuire Jr. I remember her telling me about when she first met Grandpa – she described this tall, handsome man walking across campus. It was more than his good looks, though that was definitely a factor, but the way he carried himself. It was obvious that she was smitten from the moment she laid eyes on him.
During their 60-year marriage, they basked in each other’s presence, traveling all over the country, camping, skiing, or just sitting together. I loved waking up at their house, seeing them sitting in their porch chairs in their bathrobes, reading the paper in a comfortable silence. Then Grandma would make poached eggs and English muffins with butter and marmalade, and we’d squeeze into that long porch table and talk some more.
They made their way through life together with – as Aunt Ann put it so well recently – quiet grace. Simplicity. And unshakeable faith. They laughed easily together, respected each other, and I know that 60 years didn’t feel like enough time.
As she once said to me – “everyone’s great, but they’re no Mac.”
During the last precious moments of Grandpa Mac’s life, Grandma was holding his hand, and in a rare moment, she really cried, and she said to him – “I know it’s time Mac, but I’m just not ready to let you go.”
And now we all feel like that, we’re not ready to let her go even though we know it was time and we know she was ready, and she wasn’t afraid, and she knew how loved she was, and felt nothing but gratitude for this beautiful life she got to live. Even though we know all those things, we aren’t ready to let her go. And so we won’t. We will carry her with us just like we have all those who have gone before. And we will feel grateful. Because we will know how lucky we are that we got to be in the orbit of Kathleen Mary “Grandma Kay” McGuire.
What a life.
