I was honored to talk to John regularly when he stopped by the gun store. He went through and organized numerous small gun parts at the store and had a wealth of knowledge on many topics. He was a true patriot and one of the most level headed men I have had the pleasure of talking with. I enjoyed our talks and was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He will be deeply missed.

John was a good man and a pleasure to know! He will be missed at Stratton hospital, as everywhere! Enjoyed the many conversations with John and his words of wisdom. Until we meet again, rest strong John!

John was a friend that only comes along rarely in your lifetime if you are lucky. I have three dear friends and John was one of them. They would have your back come hell or high water. You could count on them.
John's unique character and wealth of knowledge of our great nation and how we all got here proved him to be a truly genuine patriot. He made his presence known in Pittstown as a town board member and the Powamppokonk Fish and Game Club hoIding many of its offices. That is where I met him and we hit it off immediately. I never stopped learning when I was with John and our frequent trips to gun shows were trips back in time, where you touched and felt and smelled history all around you and John could tell what everything was. He reminisced about his motorcycle trips up into Maine and beyond and we would fish for steelhead or browns on Lake Ontario. John and I worked on many period projects pertaining to the Revolutionary War and John would often have discussions with Professor Emeritus Thom Barker SUNY, about history and all the nuances of the time. He held his own with anyone he talked to, it was impressive.
Jody and I were lucky to have spent time with John and Betty when they were in Cape Canaveral last November after not seeing them for four years prior, us having moved to Florida. I find myself saying “oh, Johnny” to myself as I drive down the road. I will always remember our friendship and all the great times we spent together. Everyone he touched has lost something dear with John’s passing. He is with the angels now and we will meet again and carry on like nothing ever happened.

John and I grew up together and graduated from Hoosic Valley Central. All through school we were friends and after graduation we had many great times. Some sad times also. We worked together at Hess Oil and belonged to Powamppokonk Fish and game club. I am stunned and saddened at his passing. He was a great friend to me and an irreplaceable person. I haven't seen him in the last couple of years but he's never far from my thoughts.
God bless you John, now you can be with your Mom and Dad and Phil.

You are the love of my life. I never felt so completely loved until I met you. You made me realize I could be myself and you would love me no matter what. Thank you for that. It's going to be a long journey for those that loved you to be able to move on. You truly are one of a kind and I was blessed to have spent the past 10 years with you. It was not enough.

In the years, as a family of reenactors, John took on many responsibilities as our Company Commander's right-hand man. John added constant humor in working with the troops knowing the best approach to keep us in line when necessary.
I lost a special 'playmate'...."John, I miss you even now. Future campaigns will change without you. I will hold you in my heart 'till it's time for me to 'go home' and see you once again".

To the Family of John.
The passing of our dear friend, John, has left a big hole in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
My husband Larry and I came to know John (and Carol Ann) through reenacting with Terry's Company. The years have passed far too quickly, but the memories made will be cherished forever.
I don't think I ever saw an angry or unhappy look on John's face ~ he always wore a warm smile, had kind words, was quick with a hug, and drew folks close with his laughter. He was someone you felt instantly comfortable with.
For me personally ~ I have to share that over the years he gave me the most incredible foot rubs while sitting under the company tent at reenacting events. He was the only person who could touch my feet without tickling. Truly spoiled, I was!
I will carry John with me in my heart always, but words are inadequate at this moment to convey how much he will be missed. He wasn't here long enough, and it makes me stop and think of how we need to treasure even more, every moment with those we love.
I hope his journey back to Creator and the Great Mystery will be swift, and I pray all your hearts will find peace and comfort in knowing how much he was loved by an "extended family".
We do not grieve without first loving.
We do not love without gaining more than we could ever lose.
My loving heart and deepest sympathy ~
Sue Brenz

We can hardly believe you are gone from this earth, but you remain forever in our hearts. You were our big brother, quick to defend and protect us. You were the Skipper to Dave's Gilligan. We sang "People let me tell you 'bout my best friend "...
Rest in peace dear brother, until we meet again. Love you! Sue and Dave

John....larger than life, everyone would agree! Charm, sincerity, he made everyone feel special. Always a big hug and kiss and greeting like " Hello Beautiful "! He became my good friend because he was one of my husband, Bill's lifelong friends since we first moved to Johnsonville in 1985. Everywhere we went with John, he knew somebody and they were happy to see him. Generous, kind, straightforward, you could count on John. Always interested in something, always had irons in the fire. I just wish he could have lived so much longer. What a ripoff to lose a guy who was such a rip !! Love you always, John ! Jody Ratigan, Ormond Beach FL

John will be missed by so many people that he has come in contact with during his fantastic lifetime. Jim and I are only one couple that will miss him, his honesty, his straight forward nature, his love and thirst for life, and always available when needed. We spent many hours along side him during French and Indian reenactments, pitching tents (ha ha ) putting up flyies, and enjoying meals and comradeship around the campfires. Farewell, till we meet again.

Alexis - I was so sorry to hear about your Dad. I spoke with him a while ago and we had made plans to get together. Your Mom, him, Hoag & I spent many times together whether it was going out to dinner (eating ribs was our favorite), political functions or us just stopping in because your Christmas tree was still up in March and we had to know why. We knew there had to be a story behind it and it was because they were both stubborn enough to say it was the other one's turn to take it down; so there it stayed. We spent a lot of time together when he was on the Town Board and we grew to be great friends. We were going door to door doing our political thing and this family had a shit ton of geese; which i was petrified of. I was walking down the driveway slowly to get away from the geese, and I didn't know he was behind me; he pinched my leg and i started screaming because i thought it was the geese. He laughed so hard over that!! There are so many stories i could share as i am sure many people feel the same way. He will be missed by so many. I am sorry that I will not be able to make the service; i am not in Town. Please know that I will be thinking of you and your family.

Our first trip to Cancun. John loved the hamburgers while we were there & he ate them every day for lunch. He said they were probably made out of donkey but he didn't care, best ones ever. Carol & I drove him crazy & he just laughed & shook his head. We spent a lot of awesome times together. I loved him for his spirit and loving ways & was always there if you needed him. I will always love and miss him. I really miss that beautiful smile & I am just heartbroken.

I love you pops. May you and mom rest easy. Know the trouble I’ve caused and will continue to cause is because of both of you. You made me who I am and I’m not sorry for any of it. You believed I could do anything and pushed me to do things that make me happy. You believed I can do anything I put my mind to. You have been my rock and I know you will continue to be. In this life and the next and in every life for an eternity I hope you will be my dad. I love you.
