My auntie Renate,
I‘ve only met my aunt five times in my life. But over the years she really meant a lot to me.
First of all as a child regarding her life, she seemed to be a couraged and interesting person to me. Over the years I´ve seen many pictures of my cousins and her in America, which was exciting. Everything seemed to be so different.
When my father died, she became to me the person of contact over our past time as a family. I asked her a lot of questions about her childhood, how she felt about my father, about the war, and the escape. When I became a teacher in primary school, what she also was, I felt close to her.
We had an intense time together in 1997, when I visited her a couple of days in her house in Albany. And years later when I spent 7 months in Canada, she phoned me once in a while during a difficult time.
Dear Renate, thank you for your love, I miss you here on earth, but:
We`ll meet again and until then: Rest in peace!!!
With love - Your niece Karin Dauber-van Deuren, Germany

I'll always remember the three times we have met in person!
The first time was in the late-seventies in Germany with her parents. I was still little (here the photo helps the memory).
The second time was in New York in 2001, when I visited her, and she drove me around in her red sports car. We also did up her patio, which she was very happy about! I also had the chance to meet my cousin Patty and her lovely family.
The third time was in the same year, when Renate came to be at our wedding in Greece, which was very special to us (and I think to her too).
Luckily, thanks to technology, we then face-timed from time to time, so actually, we did meet more often.
I’ll always remember you and pray to God to keep you well. Have a good paradise!
In love, your nephew Markus and family.

Your memory forever lives on through the many traditional recipes you shared, the beautiful quilts you made, and the remarkable stories you told. I feel so lucky to have had such an inspiring, strong, and determined Grandmother in my life. Thank you for always being there for your grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. The love you had for us truly showed! I will forever treasure the memories we made with you, and will pass down your traditions and stories to your great- granddaughters. I will miss you very much Grandma!
Love always,
Katie

One of my fondest memories with my Mom is when my oldest grandson Dekker and I came to New York to visit Mom together. We made some wonderful memories. We even traveled by bus to New York City. What a day it was. Took the boat on the harbor to Ellis Island and to see the great Lady, The Statue of Liberty! And as the determined and feisty woman Mom was, she even climbed the stairs to reach the top with us!!!!!!!!!!! We did it together. What a triumph. We were so proud of her. Dekker even got a picture drew of him on the streets of New York. A day we will treasure for a lifetime.

Dear family of Renate,
I met Renate back in 1999 at a quilt North Guild meeting. With a few other friends we formed a mini quilt club called the Halfmoon Stitchers. We were a group of seven by sadly over the years we have lost 3 of our members and now Renate. Along with Renate we miss and remember our friends Linda Polak, Agnes Wiltsey, and Diane Anuszewski. With great memories of fun and laughter we all had, Gladys Faulkner, Ann Gehres, and Pat Stata will carry on the stitching until we meet again.
Renate was a very strong lady with a strong personality. She was a mentor, a competitive game player, and a quilter who made up her own patterns. She was a prolific gardener and Spring was her favorite time of year. She was a wonderful cook, baker, and a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and our very dear friend.
Rest in peace Renate.

Grandma (ggma),
You enjoyed life’s simplest pleasures but most of all enjoyed sharing them with family and friends. From your famous German recipes to your your endless card games. There is so much to treasure and take with me for the rest of my life. My most favorite memories are of the summers we spent together when I was younger and all the wonderful things we did. Swimming all day, picking vegetables out of your garden, watching old movies and storytelling before bed. You also never forgot a birthday or a major event in my life. Family was everything to you and it showed. You will live on through all of us and never be forgotten. I’m so lucky and grateful to have been your granddaughter and will miss you so much!
Love your granddaughter,
Andrea

The year 1999 was the time I met a new friend—Renate
We both had bought Sergers and wanted to know how to use them properly. So-Fro Fabrics now Joanne Fabrics had an all day class on the Serger. We both had signed up and it was there we met and became friends.
I belonged to a Quilt Guild and invited Renate to come to a meeting with me. There she met more new friends, Linda, Diane, Agnes, Pat and later Ann. We formed a Mimi Quilt Group, meeting every month at each other’s homes. We did a lot together and enjoyed our annual Shop Hops, making quilts for those in need and going out to lunch.
During our 20 plus years we lost Linda, Agnes, Diane and now you Renate.
One thing we’ll always cherish is the memories and happiness we all had by being friends.
Rest In Peace my friend

May she rest in peace with her memories. We will miss her…

I had the delightful opportunity to meet Renate at the Halfmoon Senior Center, where I teach a memoir writing workshop. She was hesitant to write about her youth during WWII at first, and when she finally did, we were all weeping with her. I asked her if it helped to write it down, even if she never shared it again. She said "I got the first good night's sleep I've had since I came here [to America].")
I loved to listen to her stories about her garden, and she reminded me about summer savory, one of her favorite herbs and its importance in cooking soups. Her daughters were very precious to her. She wrote a great deal about her trip back to Germany to visit with relatives, and the places she had loved.
Renate was a strong and strong-willed woman of high principles and good humor. Our workshop is a close-knit group of friends and writers. We will miss her terribly. I have one of her quilted bags to remind me.

When I think back to all the important moments in my life, you were there. Whether a big milestone like graduation and my wedding day, trips across Europe, holidays, birthdays, or even just visits to Clifton Park, they were all special. I have countless memories with you in them that I will cherish and share with your great grandsons- many involve good food, good stories, swimming, travel, homemade outfits, and ‘boo boo grandma’. I feel so lucky to have these memories with you, and the quilts that you made for each one of us by hand with so much love will also keep you close. I will always think of you when the first spring sunshine and flowers that you loved so much start blooming. Ich liebe dich Gma.

Some of my favorite recent memories with Grandma. ❤️ There was nothing like going to visit you and immediately being greeted by your warm hugs and feeling so loved. Whether it was one of our many Thanksgivings shared together or a fun-filled summer weekend, any time spent together always felt special and memorable. I’ll always cherish these memories and will miss you and love you always.
