Ronald was a regular at the Uncommon Grounds in Clifton Park, as was I. At the time of meeting Ronald, I was attempting to figure out what it was I wanted to do with my life. Then, I was contemplating being a lawyer. Ronald told me of his educational journey to become a lawyer and convincing his brother to go into practice together. While I am not a lawyer today, the anecdote sticks in my head. He did, however, always refer to me as "the writer" and at the time, I didn't feel like I was a good enough writer for the title of a writer, if that makes sense. Currently, I have several pieces I've written published across various topics and I always think about the confidence that title Ronald gave me. This tribute wall is proof of how inspiring and kind Ronald was. He will be missed by the members of the Capital Region community who knew him.

Arlene: Very sorry to read of Ron's passing. Looking back, it does not seem like more than 40 years have passed since you and I worked together at the DA. I'm sure you are very proud of the career he put together and of the family the two of you were blessed with. Hope you and family are doing well. With all best wishes for the days and years ahead. God Bless.

This is my son, Brandon's and my story of how we met Ron and the impact he had on us: I was a stay at home mom for many years and one of my daily routines from the time my son Brandon was a toddler was going to the local Starbucks with friends where we would often sit for hours. Brandon pretty much grew up there and loved it just as much as I did. He would bring his little Matchbox cars and run them up and down the window ledge. This is where he also learned the ability to schmooze and interact with adults from an early age. One of those adults we met there was Ron. Ron, who always dressed like a million dollars, would saunter in each day and we quickly became coffee buddies. Over the years our table grew and grew and in the summer time we would find ourselves stealing chairs from other tables so we could all fit around the table. Ron and Brandon had a special bond. Brandon looked up to Ron and Ron, well he admired Brandon. In fact today I went back in saved voicemails and found one from Ron from 7 years ago checking in to see how Brandon was feeling. Brandon would often wake up on weekends as he got older and asked if we could go find Ron and the rest of our coffee crew. Yes we had two different coffee crews. One at Dunkin in Malta with the one and only Art and then our Starbucks crew. We would make our rounds on weekends table hopping from Dunkin to Starbucks. Then Starbucks moved and Ron found a new coffee place with our other buddy Mike at the Cookie Factory, so now one would find Brandon and I circling the parking lots to see if we could spot his car. Ron always jumped from his chair when he saw Brandon and I walking in. It kind of reminds me of when my dad would see me walk in the house. Sure made you feel special. Over the years we met his wife, Arlene and we forged a wonderful friendship and would often go out to dinner together. It’s been quite a few years since we’ve gone out to dinner, but those memories will always stay with us. When I started working at DePaula Chevrolet, Ron came in and bought a new car, so I was lucky enough to get to visit with him when he brought his car in for service. The last picture was the last time I saw Ron. It was last November. I have spoken to him on his phone a few times checking in on him after he was sick for a while. I just text him on October 8th, but never heard back. I didn’t think much of it as he was still old school and had a flip phone and I just figured he didn’t get it. The day I drove Brandon to college we took a drive through the parking lot of the old Starbucks location, which is now Uncommon Grounds, hoping to find him there. No luck. Ron was an amazing criminal defense attorney for over 40 years. He was sharp as a tack. You might say we held court everyday at a round table in Starbucks. Fortunately I never needed his attorney services, but he sure did have some great stories to share. Ron, Brandon and I will forever cherish the memories and talks we shared all these years. Thank you for always being so kind to us and for loving us like we were family. You’ll be dearly missed. Until we meet again, court has been adjourned.
Brandon and I send our sincerest condolences to Arlene and family. We will miss you Ron.
Love,
Laurie and Brandon Barrett

I had the occasion to face Ron in difficult trials more than once. He was the consummate gentleman, and always beat me! His trial preparation was faultless. He was never sexist. He treated everyone in the court with the same respect. I am so very sorry for all of you, his family, on this sad loss.
