In Memory of Mina DiDomenico. Courageous Spirit. Proud Immigrant. Extraordinary Mother.

On Saturday, January 5, 2019, Giacomina (Mina) DiDomenico, 79, cast her rolling walker aside for the last time and walked unassisted and pain-free into the bright white light. Born to Antonio and Ruffina in Italy, she faced many challenges in her early years. Experiencing the turmoil of World War II, being the fourth of five siblings and finding herself orphaned before the age of seven were the foundation of an iron will and fierce independence that would help to define her character for the rest of her life. Speaking no English, at the age of 23, she immigrated by herself to New York City to chase her American Dream. It was there that she met Giosuè Caputo, the one great love of her life. She found employment in domestic childcare, but as her language skills improved, so did opportunities. Mina worked in corporate kitchens as a cook, and would spend the ensuing 55 years in her new home city living, working, and raising her only daughter, Eleonora. She retired in 2004 from her position as personal chef to renowned architect, I.M. Pei. However, instilling her values, resilience, and fortitude, it was of her role as a single mother that she was most proud. After retirement, as her health began to decline, her connection to family and friends were the lifeline that kept her going. She would return to visit friends and family in Rome, Italy every couple of years for her entire life- and looked forward to a visit this summer. Through the internet, she was glad to be able to stay connected and during the recent holiday season was so happy to be able to speak and see many of those she couldn’t be with in person. Over the years, she dismissed many offers to relocate as she was not ready to sever ties with her adopted hometown. But, in November 2018, on her own terms, she made the move to Halfmoon, NY to be closer to the most important person in her life, Eleonora. A true lover of nature, during her last months she was able to live, surrounded by the late fall foliage and local wildlife, something she had not experienced for the past several years in New York City. Once she relocated, as her spirits began to rise, sadly, her health continued to decline. Her friends and family can take comfort in knowing that she spent her final hours at home enjoying her daily espresso and visiting with her daughter. Though not a particularly religious person, Mina spoke frequently of yearning to see her mother again. Her peaceful exit assures us that the two have reunited and are running amongst butterflies on the Italian countryside of her youth. She is survived by her daughter, Eleonora (Sim) Morrell of Clifton Park, NY, her sister Rina DiDomenico of Rome, Italy, and several nieces and nephews whom she adored. She was predeceased by her brothers: Angelo, Claudio, and Nello. To fulfill her last requests, there will be no service. She was cremated immediately, and her ashes will be scattered between a park on the east side of Manhattan and the rolling hills of Campagnano, Italy. Sabato 5 gennaio 2019, Giacomina (Mina) DiDomenico, 79 anni, gettò il suo girello per l'ultima volta e camminò senza aiuto e senza dolore nelle bracce della sua mamma e di Dio.
Nata a Antonio e Ruffina in Italia, ha affrontato molte situazioni difficile nei suoi primi anni. Vivendo il tumulto della seconda guerra mondiale, essere la quarta di cinque fratelli e trovarsi orfana prima di sette anni era il fondamento di uno spirito di ferro e di una fiera indipendenza che avrebbe aiutato a definire il suo personaggio per il resto della sua vita.
Con un senso di avventura, coraggio e non parlando inglese, all'età di 23 anni, è emigrata da sola a New York per inseguire il suo sogno americano. Fu lì che incontrò Giosuè Caputo, l'unico grande amore della sua vita. Trovò impiego nell'assistenza all'infanzia domestica, ma man mano che le sue abilità linguistiche miglioravano, aumentavano anche le opportunità. Mina lavorava come cuoca in una cucina aziendale e ha trascorrso i successivi 55 anni nella sua nuova città, vivendo, lavorando e allevando la sua unica figlia, Eleonora. Si è ritirata nel 2004 dalla sua posizione di chef personale del famoso architetto, I.M. Pei. Tuttavia, infondendo i suoi valori, la sua resiliena, e la sua forza d'animo, era il suo ruolo di madre singola che era più orgogliosa.
Tornava a visitare amici e famiglia a Roma, in Italia ogni paio d'anni per tutta la sua vita, e sperava di visitare quest'estate. Attraverso Internet, era capace di stare in contatto e durante le ultime festività natalizie è stata contenta di parlare e vedere molti di quelli con cui non poteva essere di persona.

Dopo il pensionamento, mentre la sua salute iniziava a diminuire, la sua connessione con la famiglia e gli amici era la linea di vita che la faceva andare avanti. Nel corso degli anni, ha respinto molte offerte di trasferirsi perché non era pronta a tagliare i legami con la sua città adottiva, New York.
Nel novembre 2018, a modo suo, ha fatto il trasferimento a Halfmoon, NY per essere più vicina alla persona più importante della sua vita, Eleonora. Una vera amante della natura, durante i suoi ultimi mesi è stata in grado di vivere, circondata dal fogliame autunnale e dalla fauna locale, qualcosa che non aveva visto negli ultimi anni a New York.
Una volta che si è trasferita, mentre i suoi spiriti hanno cominciato a salire, purtroppo, la sua salute ha continuato a diminuire. I suoi amici e la famiglia possono trarre conforto nel sapere che ha trascorso le sue ultime ore a casa godendosi il suo espresso quotidiano e visitando con sua figlia.
Sebbene non fosse una persona particolarmente religiosa, Mina parlava spesso del suo desiderio di rivedere sua madre. La sua uscita pacifica ci assicura che i due si sono riuniti e stanno correndo tra le farfalle sulla campagna italiana della sua giovinezza.
È sopravvissuta da sua figlia, Eleonora (Sim) Morrell di Clifton Park, NY, sua sorella Rina DiDomenico di Roma, Italia, e diversi nipoti che lei adorava. Era premorta dai suoi fratelli: Angelo, Claudio e Nello.
