Hansen Family,
I'm so very sorry to hear of George's passing. He was one of the good guys in DEC's Division of Water. No matter how busy he may have been, he always made time to discuss a situation and thereby help to resolve it. He was very knowledgeable and was one of my "go-to" people. I hope that you will take some solace in knowing that he truly made a difference.

My condolences to Janice and the Hansen family on your loss. I am going to miss those philosophical discussions with George on various topics, not all were related to railroading and usually never ended up solving anything but highly enjoyable; his humor; and especially his ability to get me involved, sometimes reluctantly, in various activities over the years that, to my pleasant surprise, added new experiences and enjoyment to my life. I will always be appreciative of his efforts to get me involved with the Battenkill Railroad that turned out to be one of my life's highlights. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed!

Dear family and friends of George,
I was George's roommate during our freshman year at RPI, best man at his wedding, and friend for over 50 years.
While George was often quiet, I could never easily tell where his mind was. At RPI we both studied hard. And letting loose was something to break the boredom of studying hard. I made the mistake of thinking George Hansen was someone who would never be inclined to pull a fast one. One day he seemed just a bit watchful and in a good mood. When I sat down I found out why. George had meticulously removed all the metal screws from my chair and replaced them with wooden match sticks. When I sat in my chair it disintegrated and I ended up on the floor. That gave new meaning to a 'study break' and marked the beginning of our long friendship.
Perhaps the highlight of returning to our 50th reunion at RPI in 2014 was the delight of seeing George and his family again. I had hoped he would visit us in Florida, but the time for that is now past.
What is not past is the celebration of a life well lived. If I ever get to heaven, I plan to remember to look carefully before I sit. And I sure will look for my old friend George. Meanwhile perhaps I'll practice taking chairs apart.
With Condolences to Family and Friends,
Jim McGuire

We are very sad to hear of George's passing. He was a good man, a valuable colleague and a friend to many. George lived with an aura of quiet dignity, while in his back pocket he carried a most clever and hilarious sense of humor which he used appropriately.
Our deepest sympathy to Janice, Teresa and Tom and the entire family.

As the Chair of the Halfmoon Trails and Open Space Committee, I will miss his insight and humor. I only met and knew George thru the TOCS; however, I felt connected to him. Now that I read that he is was interested in railroads, I regret that we never spoke of the D&H or the B&M or Fitchburg or ...
