Obituary of Ernest F. Opitz

Ernest Opitz, age 92 of Halfmoon passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes. Born in Cohoes, he was the son of the late Stephen and Helen Rivers Opitz. He was predeceased by his loving wife Stasha Noradki Opitz, and his brother Edward Opitz.

Ernest was a 1943 graduate of Cohoes High School. Ernest served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the LST 722 as a radio room supervisor. He was awarded the Bronze Star participating in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns. He retired from Behr Manning/Norton Co. in Watervliet after 35 years of employment. After retirement, he enjoyed his life as a berry farmer. He was a member of the VFW Post 1498 and American Legion Post 1450.

He is survived by his son Eric S. (Carol) Opitz, daughters Sandra (Herbert) Roy, and Sharon (Stephen) Brown. He is also survived by cherished grandchildren Alexandra B. and Katharine L. Roy, sisters-in-law Mary Jane Noradki and Clara Norris, several nieces and nephews, and cousins, and his devoted friend Albert Bunk who was with him ‘til the end.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Catricala Funeral Home Inc., 1597 Route 9, Clifton Park, with a funeral service Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Saratoga National Cemetery.
